3 Reason Why Your Vision Board Won’t Work

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

New Years Day, I offered my first vision board workshop of 2021. Vision boards became popular in the ’90s when the book and DVD, “The Secret” was released. A vision board is a collage of images of the things you want, pasted on a poster board. “The Secret” teaches the Law of Attraction. The simplest belief behind this idea is, when you think of something long enough, you can attract it to yourself. Once you create your vision board, look at it every day, and the law of attraction will bring these things your way.

Well, honestly, it’s not quite that simple. However, years ago when I created my first vision board, that’s exactly how I believed it would happen. I gathered images of the car, house, jewelry, and other material things I wanted, and I begin waiting for all of these things to appear in my life. Needless to say, nothing happened.

Today, I have a different approach with my vision board. It serves as a visual reminder of the things I want to accomplish, not just the things I want to have. I start by seeking God through prayer and asking Him for His desires for me. What I’ve found is that God’s vision for my life is greater than anything I could ever imagine.

Since I’ve been seeking God for his plans for my life and then developing a vision board that aligns with the thoughts and ideas that are revealed to me once I pray, my life has been amazing. I’ve spoken on stages throughout China, I’ve coach people from all over the world, and I have a coaching business that has continued to grow over the last 5 years and much more.

My board shows me how I should spend my time and energy. There is no magic in the vision board, itself. Staring at pictures of money, will not manifest money. However, if you create a strategy to increase your money, the money will manifest.

So, why even bother with a vision board?

Life has a way of making us forget our dreams and visions. Bills, frustrations, disappointments, and pain can easily become the focus of our daily life. Once this happens, it’s easy to stop believing in our dreams. And if we stop believing, our dreams never stand a chance of coming true.

I believe God gives us visions and dreams to keep us inspired during difficult times. The vision board serves as a visual reminder in these times. If you hold on to your dream, you become available to receive methods for how to make them come true. However, there are a few things the will keep the visions on your vision board from coming true.

Here are 3 reasons your vision board will not work:

1. The visions on your board are not from God.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” If God has a plan for you, you must consult Him about the plan and visions for your life. Many times we let the world tell us what we should desire and have in life. We get lost in the plans of man instead of seeking the plans of God. One sure way you will not accomplish the vision on your vision board is by filling it with pictures that aren’t inspired by God.

2. Your mindset is too negative to achieve your vision.

Proverbs 23:7 says, “So as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Many of us suffer from “stinking thinking”. We spend time focusing on all the things that can go wrong, instead of having the faith required to take action towards our visions. In order to accomplish our vision, we much develop a healthy mindset. You must learn to control your thinking and overcome your negative self-talk. Studies show that we encounter up to 50,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day and over 70% of those thoughts are negative. Learning to control your thinking is essential in achieving your visions and dreams.

3. Fear is ruling your life.

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Deciding to go after your dreams can feel extremely scary. Dreams are not logical and rarely make sense. Society encourages us to make the “safe” choices in life, but stepping out on faith does not feel safe, it can be frightening. The only way we can accomplish our dreams is to feel the fear and take action anyway. You have to learn to overcome your fear in order to attain your dreams. The wonderful news is that you do not have to do it alone, God will be with you the entire time.
